Captain Hooker
From an account of a Western traveler in Bangkok who embarked on his journey specifically to have sex with as many prostitutes as possible:1
Let me make a few things clear: I like sex. I like it a lot. But there are some things that I'm just not interested in doing. Having sex with countless Thai prostitutes is one of them. At some point I'd like to do a more in-depth look into the kinds of guys who visit prostitutes, and particularly the men who visit prostitutes in Bangkok/other parts of South-East Asia, but for now I'll just have to be satisfied with exploiting the experiences of the guy written about here, who slept with something like nineteen hookers in his two-weeks trip in the city.
The story above isn't the most forehead-slapping of the accounts on the site. Consider this one:
This after detailing how he bargained his way into the pants of about a dozen other hooker in the days previous. Again, I'm no purist, but the way that these guys view the whole process is pretty shocking. It's like the whole gold-digger/womanizer paradigm magnified a million times and shoved into one city.
It's strange how commonplace buying a hooker can be in the minds of many people. It's just something that I don't have the stomach for. The exploitation and degredation that occurs in many of these situations is pretty deplorable, not to mention the fact that they've got to be pretty desperate to find themselves in that situation anyway. Taking advantage of it just seems very wrong.3
Prostitution is legal in many countries around the world--New Zealand, Nevada and Australia for example--but even in those places the sickness and general fucked-upness of the women who find themselves as hookers exists whether or not they have a Hookers' Union or can sue the Johns that don't pay them in a court of law.
Of course, the only real evidence I have for this is the stories told to me by an acquaintance who lived with a forty-two-year-old prostitute in New Zealand. The woman reportedly set things on fire, threw pots and pans out into the yard, stole clothes, burst into tears unprovoked, and generally behaved like a madwoman. I'm not saying this is because she had customers with back hair that a normal comb couldn't manage (true story), or customers that shit all over themselves while she was giving them a non-therapeutic massage (also true), but this is the type of person that becomes a hooker--the type of person at the end of their rope.
It seems better to make it legal and restricted than to have it run rampant and unprotected, but the whole practice itself seems like some kind of unfortunate miniature of the dysfunction that exists in people all over the world.

2A sex club.
3Of course these same arguments could be used for something like pornography, but that's something I'd be willing to discuss at a later time.
. . . [A]t around eight o'clock I went back to my Nana 02 to meet that 18 year old girl(sic). Her english (sic) was not very good so I did not talk to her for a long time and asked her soon to come with me to my hotel for a short time, since I wanted to check the Grace Hotel Coffee shop later on and because my plane would leave very early the next day and I would have to get up before 5am(sic).
This girl was very, very shy. I could not manage this time to shower with her. After shower she went to my king size bed and put the blanket over her head. I touched and kissed her for a long time before I removed her slip. I took really a long time and it seems she has not done this very often before - she had not even condoms with her (but she wanted to use some). Neither did she have a bag for her personal things. Not very common. Even though she was inexperienced it was my best experience in Bangkok. I really had the feeling I loved her and I lost a tear. (Eh, just sic the whole thing.) (Emphasis added.)

I looked through a one way glass to choose from a room full of girls sitting in evening gowns watching TV. I pick #83. Incredibly cute and tiny, only 140 cm and 38 kilos. Just a really sweet, adorable girl with a doll like face. I really wish I had a camera.
We agree on 750 baht for anything else I wanted and she proceeds to bathe me in a large tub, massage me, and we make love. The cutest girl I've had so far. Her only physical flaw was having had a baby. Her stomach sagged and was a mess of stretch marks, plus she had a huge scar going all the way across her lower abdomen, an apparent surgical attempt to take some of it in. Really ugly.
